Uniform Guidelines

Student dress, grooming, and personal cleanliness impact the image of St. John Notre Dame. It is a part of school tradition to wear uniforms to avoid class distinction and over-interest in fads. Besides representing school families, the clean, up-to-code uniform draws students’ attention to community responsibility. A neat, clean, and tasteful appearance with well-groomed hair creates an atmosphere of confidence, respect, and learning. Moreover, it is an opportunity to uphold, reflect, and respect the dignity of the human person. In adhering to the St. John Notre Dame uniform and dress code, students practice the virtues of humility, modesty, obedience, and respect.

It is the joint responsibility of parents and students to see that the uniform and dress code of the school is carried out daily; it is the responsibility of the teacher and staff to monitor and report non-compliance. Every student is expected to be in proper uniform every school day unless otherwise authorized. The uniform should be neat, clean, and in good repair. Violations of any uniform, dress code, and appearance requirements are subject to school disciplinary sanctions. The school cannot anticipate every fashion trend that may develop and therefore reserves the right to make judgments regarding the application of these general guidelines to specific items at any time.

Regular School Day Attire

TK-8 Girls and Boys

Students must be in compliance with the school-approved uniforms at all times.
Appropriate shoes must be worn at school. All shoes must have enclosed toes and heels. For safety reasons, flip flops, sandals, Crocs, moccasins, Ugg-type shoes, slippers, flats, or boots are not to be worn. Shoes that “light up” are not allowed.
Undershirts must be white, with no designs, printing, etc., that show through the uniform shirt. P.E. shirts may not be worn as undershirts. White long-sleeve turtlenecks may be worn under short-sleeve polo shirts.
Navy-blue shorts (no shorter than 3 inches above the knee) may be worn regardless of the weather. Note: School shorts are different from PE shorts. School shorts have belt loops, PE shorts do not.
Sweatshirt: Plain navy-blue or gray sweatshirt is permitted. SJND emblem sweatshirt is permitted. Sweatshirts should be clean, neat, and tidy, free of stains and rips or tears.
Wearable technology is not permitted, excluding devices that are medically necessary and devices that have the sole function of displaying time.
Extremely oversized or undersized clothing is not to be worn.
Belts are optional, but recommended. They must be blue or black.
Slacks must be clean, neat and tidy as well as free from frayed hemlines and ripped knees.
SJND headgear and outerwear are to be worn only outdoors.

Girls

Blouse or polo: Plain white blouse with collar, short or long sleeves, and button front. Plain white or navy knit polo shirt with short or long sleeves. Blouses and polos must be worn tucked in for Mass.
Skirt and jumper: Windsor plaid jumpers/skirts purchased through Tommy Hilfiger. The length of the skirt or jumper should be no higher than approximately 3 inches above the knee, measuring from mid-knee. Solid black, navy-blue, white or gray tights/leggings may be worn under the skirt or jumper.
Pants: Solid, navy-blue cotton twill or corduroy slacks. Knit, yoga, denim, baggy, cargo-type, multi-pocketed or elastic leg pants are not acceptable.
Shorts: Solid, navy-blue, cotton twill or corduroy walking shorts, no higher than approximately 3 inches above the knee. Knit, denim, cargo-type, or multi-pocket are not acceptable. PE shorts are only permitted on PE days.
Socks: Solid white, navy-blue, or SJND crew socks, ankle socks, knee socks, tights/leggings, or short sport socks are acceptable. Tights/leggings are to be solid, not patterned.
Shoes: Shoes must be appropriate for P.E. and playground activity on the blacktop. Girls may not wear high heels, platform shoes, or any light, plastic, or “dressy” type shoe that is not appropriate for school or safe for playground activity.
Jewelry: Girls with pierced ears may wear one set of stud earrings with small posts at the ear lobe (no hoops or dangling earrings), one wristwatch, and one religious ring. One necklace and one bracelet may be worn only if it is of a religious nature.
Nail polish: Only clear, pale pink or French-tip is allowed. One color must be worn on all nails. For safety reasons, acrylic or fake nails are not permitted.

Boys

Polo: Plain white or navy-blue knit polo shirt, short or long sleeves. Polos must be tucked in for Mass.
Pants: Solid, navy-blue cotton twill or corduroy slacks. Denim, baggy, cargo-type, multi-pocketed, or elastic leg pants are not acceptable. Pants must fit – no bagging, sagging or dragging.
Shorts: Solid, navy-blue cotton twill or corduroy walking shorts, no higher than approximately 3 inches above the knee. Denim, baggy, cargo-type or multi-pocketed are not acceptable. Shorts must fit – no bagging, sagging or dragging. Undershorts cannot be longer than the uniform shorts.
Socks: Solid white, navy-blue, or SJND emblem crew, tube, or short sport socks are acceptable.
Shoes: Shoes must be appropriate for P.E. and playground activity on the blacktop.
Jewelry: One wristwatch and one religious ring are allowed. No other visible jewelry, especially necklaces or buttons, may be worn unless of a religious nature. No earrings; no bracelets unless it is the school spirit wristband or religious (one only).
Make-up: Make-up is not allowed, including tattoos or body writing.

Mass Day Attire

During Mass days, students are required to dress in Mass attire. Required dress for these days will consist of the following:

TK-4 Boys & Girls - Button down cardigan with the SJND crest purchased through Tommy Hilfiger
5-8 Boys & Girls - Pullover long-sleeve sweater or pullover sweater vest with the SJND crest purchased through Tommy Hilfiger
Regular school uniform On Mass days, please arrive dressed neatly in school Mass attire. SJND celebrates Mass as a school every Friday and on Holy Days of Obligation, as well as a few feast days throughout the school year.

If Mass is celebrated on a non-Friday, classes assigned PE for that day should wear their PE uniform instead of Mass attire.

Physical Education Attire

P.E. uniforms are required for all students, grades K-8, and consist of the following:

White/gray SJND emblem P.E. T-shirt
Navy-blue SJND emblem P.E. gym shorts (no shorter than three inches above the knee)
Sturdy, athletic-type shoes

On PE days, please arrive in your PE uniform and remain in your PE uniform for the remainder of the day. Students will not change on campus.

PE uniforms can be purchased through Tommy Hilfiger. Certain items bought through the BSN store are not approved for dress code.

Spirit Wear Attire

Wednesday is SJND Spirit Day. Students are allowed to wear any one of the SJND official spirit polo or T-shirts with their school uniform. Additionally, special SJND team/club/theater/activities shirts may also be worn. These shirts can be worn with an SJND dress or uniform pants, shorts, or skirts of the appropriate length. Students must dress out for PE on Spirit Wear days.

Free Dress Attire

The principal at various times throughout the year designates free dress days. Basic uniform code applies during free dress. When free dress is worn, the regulations regarding shoes, headgear, make-up, etc. must be followed. Please note that the following types of clothing are not permitted:

Jeans that are worn, tattered, with holes, or give an unkempt appearance to the student.
Leggings, tights, and yoga pants worn without a dress or shorts on top.
Sweatpants or pajamas of any kind.
Athletic warm-up pants.
T-shirts with offensive pictures, sayings, designs, etc., “muscle” shirts, half-shirts, cropped tops, halter tops, or spaghetti straps.
Bagging, sagging, dragging shorts or pants.
Short shorts or tight-fitting shorts such as exercise or bicycle shorts.
