Hydrogen Grand Prix Teams

SJND was introduced to hydrogen-powered RC cars through a one time grant from Toyota. The grant provided our two nascent teams of 5 students each RC car kits, hydrogen fuel cells and entrance into the  International Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) Competition.

The  teams were chosen based on essays about their interest and commitment to the newly formed club. Through scientific research, practice, and trial and error, the teams, “Jesus Take the Wheel” (7th grade) and “Highway to Heaven” (8th grade), built the cars, powered them with hydrogen,  and drove them competitively. 

At their first Northern California qualifying race of predominantly high schools, our middle school 8th graders powered into 5th place while our 7th graders sped into 1st place! Thus our young emergent teams qualified for the state competition in Orange County in April.

The SJND teams were invited to present at Sacramento Capitol Hydrogen Village, which is a milestone in policy maker education event, offering a comprehensive showcase of various hydrogen and fuel cell- related technologies. Our students showcased their cars, learning experience, and teamwork  to local representatives, companies and organizations. 

In order to continue this amazing journey in April at the State Competition in Orange County, we need local community support.
